skin over the ball of the thumb, andcommunicates with the external cutaneous nerve; the inner one supj)lies the inttB-gument of the palm of the hand, anastomosing with the cutaneous branch of theulnar. Both nerves cross the annular ligament previous to their distribution. In the palm of the hand, the median nerve is covered by the integument andpalmar fascia, and rests upon the tendons of the Flexor muscles. In this situationit becomes enlarged, somewhat flattened, of a reddish colour, and divides into twobranches. Of these, the external one supplies a muscular branch to some of themuscles of the thumb, and digital branches to the thumb and index-finger; theinternal branch supplying digital branches to the middle finger and part of theindex and ring-fingers. The branch to the muscles of the thumb is a short nerve, which subdivides tosupply the Abductor, Opponens, and outer head of the Flexor brevis pollicis muscles;the remaining muscles of this group being supplied by the ulnar nerve.
Text Appearing After Image:
ULNAR. 541 The digital branches ars five in number. The Jirst and second pass alongthe borders of tlie thumb, tlie most external one communicating with branches ofthe radial nerve. The third passes along the radial side of the index-finger, andsupplies the first Lumbrical muscle. The fourth subdivides to supply the adjacentsides of the index and middle fingers, and sends a branch to the second Lumbricalmuscle. The fifth supplies the adjacent sides of the middle and ring-fingers, andcommunicates with a branch from the ulnar nerve. Each digital nerve, opposite the base of the first phalanx, gives off a dorsalbranch, which joins the dorsal digital nerve, and runs along the side of thedorsum of the finger, ending in the integument over the last phalanx. At theend of the finger, the digital nerve divides into a palmar and a dorsal branch; theformer supplies the extremity of the finger, and the latter ramifies round andbeneath the nail. The digital nerves, as they run along the fingers, are
