hes of commu-nication are with the pneu-mogastric, sympathetic, and facial, and the tym-panic branch. The branches to thepneumogastric, are two fila-ments, one to its auricularbranch, and one to the up-per ganglion of the pneu-mogastric. The branch to the ^jm-pathetic is connected withthe superior cervical gang-lion. The branch of commu-nication with the facial, perforates the posteriorbelly of the Digastric. Itarises from the trunk ofthe nerve below the petrousganglion, and joins the fa-cial just after its exit fromthe stylo-mastoid foramen. The tympanic branch(Jacobsons nerve), arisesfrom the petrous ganglion, and enters a small bonycanal on the base of thepetrous portion of the tem-poral bone. (This openingis placed on the bony ridgewhich separates the ca-rotid canal from the jugularfossa.) It ascends to the tympanum, enters this cavity by an aperture in its floor close to the inner wall, and divides into three branches, which are contained in grooves upon the surfaceof the promontory.

Its branches of communication are three, and occupy separate grooves on thesurface of the promontory. One of these arches forwards and downwards to thecarotid canal to join the carotid plexus. A second runs vertically upwards tojoin the greater superficial petrosal nerve, as it lies in the hiatus Fallopii. Thethird branch runs upwards and forwards towards the anterior surface of the petrousbone, and passes through a small aperture in the sphenoid and temporal bones, tothe exterior of the skull, where it joins the otic ganglion. This nerve, in its coursethrough the temporal bone, passes by the ganglionic enlargement of the facial, andhas a connecting filament with it. The branches of the glosso-pharyngeal nerve are the carotid, pharyngeal, mus-cular, tonsillitic, and lingual. The carotid branches descend along the
