ganglia. 2. The branches of communication between the ganglia and the cerebral orspinal nerves, also consist of a white and a grey portion ; the former proceedingfrom the spinal nerve to the ganglion, the latter passing from the ganglion to thespinal nerve. 3. The primary branches of distribution also consist of two kinds of nerve-fibres, the sympathetic and spinal. They have a remarkable tendency to formintricate plexuses, which encircle the blood-vessels, and are conducted by themto the viscera. The greater number, however, of these branches pass to a seriesof ganglia, or ganglionic masses, of variable size, situated in the large cavities ofthe trunk, the thorax, and abdomen ; and are connected with the roots of thegreat arteries of the viscera. These ganglia are single and unsymmetrical, andare called the cardiac and semilunar. From these visceral ganglia numerousplexuses are derived, which entwine round the blood-vessels, and are conductedby them to the viscera. 4 ganglia.3 124 5I

o o 562 SYMPATHETIC NERVE. The cephalic portion of the sympathetic, consists of four ganglia. I. Theophthahnic ganglion. 2. The spheno-palatine, or Meckels ganglion. 3. Theotic, or Arnolds ganglion. 4. The submaxillary ganglion. These have been already described in connection with each of the threedivisions of the fifth nerve. Cervical Portion of the Sympathetic. The cervical portion of the sympathetic consists of three ganglia on each side, which are distinguished according to their position, as the superior, middle, andinferior cervical. The Superior Cervical Ganglion, the largest of the three, is placed oppositethe second and third cervical vertebrae, and sometimes as low as the fourth or fifth. It is of a reddish-grey colour, and usually fusiform in shape: sometimes broad, andoccasionally constricted at intervals, so as to give rise to the opinion, that it con-sists of the coalescence of several smaller ganglia. It is in relation, in front, withthe sheath of the internal carotid art
