It forms a thin tubular prolongation round the outer surface of the cord,which blends with the superficial layer, and is continuous with the dartos of thescrotum. From the back of the scrotum, the conjoined layers may be traced intothe perinceum, where they are continuous witli the deej) layer of the supeificialfascia in this region, which is attached, behind, to the triangular ligament, and oneach side, to the ramus of the pubes and ischium. The connections of this fasciaserve to explain the course taken by the urine in extravasation of this fluid fromrupture of the urethra; passing forwards from the perinasum into the scrotum,it ascends on to the abdomen, but is prevented extending into the thighs by theattachment of the fascia to the ramus of the pubes and ischium, on each side, andto Pouparts ligament in front. 380.—Inguinal Herni^. The aponeurosis of the External oblique muscle is exposed on the removal ofthis fascia. It is a thin, strong, membranous aponeurosis, the fibres of which aredirected obliquely downwards and inwards. It is attached to the anterior superiorspinous process of the ilium, the spine of the pubes, the pectineal line, front of thepubes, and linea alba. That portion of the aponeurosis which extends from the 728 SURGICAL ANATOMY OF INGUINAL HERNIA. anterior superior spine of the ilium, to the spine of the pubes, is termed Poupartsligament, or the crural arch; and that portion which is inserted into the pectinealline, is termed Gimbernats ligament. Just above and to the outer side of the crest of the pubes, a triangular intervalis seen in the aponeurosis of the External oblique, called the external abdominalring; it transmits the spermatic cord in the male, and the round ligament in thefemale.
