the inter-space be-tween the two heads of theFlexor brevis pollicis, andentering a tendino-osseous ca-nal, similar to those for theother flexor tendons, is in-serted into the base of the lastphalanx of the thumb. Relations. By its anteriorsurface, with the Flexor sub-limis digitorum. Flexor carpiradialis. Supinator longus, andradial vessels. By its poste-rior surface, with the radius,interosseous membrane, andPronator quadratus. By itsulnar border, with the Flexorprofundus digitorum, fromwhich it is separated by theanterior interosseous vesselsand nerve. The Pronator Quadratusis a small, flat muscle, quadri-lateral in form, extendingtransversely across the frontof the radius and ulna, abovetheir carpal extremities. Itarises from the oblique lineon the lower fourth of theanterior surface of the shaftof the ulna, and the surface ofbone immediately below it ;from the internal body of theulna; and from a strong apo-neurosis which covers the 173.—Front of the Left Fore-arm. 278 MUSCLES AND FASCIiE. inner third of the muscle. The fibres pass horizontally outwards, to be insertedinto the lower fourth of the anterior surface and external border of the shaft ofthe radius. Relations. By its anterior surface, with the Flexor profundus digitorum, theFlexor longus pollicis, Flexor carpi radialis, and the radial vessels. By its poste-rior surface, with the radius, ulna, and interosseous membrane. Nerves. All the muscles of the superficial layer are supplied by the mediannerve, excepting the Flexor carpi ulnaris, which is supplied by the ulnar. Of thedeep layer, the Flexor profundus digitorum is supplied conjointly by the ulnarand anterior interosseous nerves, the Flexor longus pollicis and Pronator quadratusby the anterior interosseous nerve. Actions. These muscles act upon the fore-arm, the wrist, and hand.
