nt of Muscles. Abductor pollicis. Flexor ossis metacarpi, part of theFlexor brevis pollicis, and the anterior annular ligament. The Trapezoid is the smallest bone in the second row. It may be known byits wedge-shaped form; its broad end occupying the dorsal, its narrow end thepalmar surface of the hand. Its superior surface, quadrilateral in form, smoothand slightly concave, articulates with the scaphoid. The inferior surface articu-lates with the upper end of the second metacarpal bone; it is convex from side toside, concave from before backwards, and subdivided, by an elevated ridge, intotwo unequal lateral facets. The posterior or dorsal, and anterior or ptalmarsurfaces are rough, for the attachment of ligaments; the former being the largerof the two. The external surface, convex and smooth, articulates with thetrapezium. The internal surface is concave and smooth below, for articulationwith the 08 magnum, rough above, for the a^ttachment of an interosseous ligament. 112 OSTEOLOGY.
Text Appearing After Image:
CARPUS. 3 To ascertain to which side this bone belongs, let the broad dorsal surface beheld upwards, and its inferior concavo-convex surface forwards; the internal con-cave surface will then point to the side to which the bone belongs. Articulatiotis. With four bones; the scaphoid above, second metacarpal bonebelow, trapezium externally, os magnum internally. Attachment of 3Iuscles. Part of the Flexor brevis pollicis. The Os Magnum is the largest bone of the carpus, and occupies the centre ofthe wrist. It presents, above, a rounded portion or head, which is received intothe concavity formed by the scaphoid and semi-lunar bones; a constricted portionor neck; and, below, the body. Its superior surface is rounded, smooth, andarticulates with the semi-lunar.
