Summary

[edit]
Description Ananuri Fortress lies some 66 km north of the Georgian capital, Tbilisi, alongside the Georgian Military Highway. Its location, overlooking the Zhinvali Reservoir, is superb. It was once a stronghold of the dukes of Aragvi. Within its walls are two churches, the larger of which - the Assumption Church - can be visited. It dates from 1689 and contains some fine but faded frescoes. This photograph is of some Georgian script carved on one of the walls of this church.
