Description

Family: Anacardiaceae Distribution: Native of America, widely cultivated and naturalised in tropics. Photographed at Kavali.

Small trees, branches spreading, Flowers 0.6-1cm across, pink, in axillary or terminal panicles. Fruit a reniform nut of 2.5-4cm long, supported by fleshy and juicy hypocarp a false fruit formed from the thallamus. It is commercially known as Cashew nut plant. The seed is edible and tasty, it has good market value. The hypo carp is also edible.
