Title
An unidentified silver object
Description
English: Treasure case 2011 T879: Disclaimed, returned to finder.

Description

A distorted and fragmentary silver object of uncertain function. The slender twisted stem, which is broken at the distal end and bent in two places, is joined beyond a tongue-like junction to a very incomplete flat plate. The plate's surviving edge, at the shoulders and on one side, is notched/ serrated. There is one (surviving) decorative stamped motif - a central eye with three concentric surrounding rings.

Date: uncertain.

Dimensions: length 49.6 mm. Weight: 3.12 g.

Discussion

Non-destructive surface metal analysis conducted at the British Museum indicated a silver content of approximately 94-97%.

On the balance of probabilities this object is over 300 years old, though it cannot be attributed to any particular date or culture, and as such it qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.
