Description

An old Department of Highways (of Ontario) survey marker at the entrance to the Butler House in Orleans (Ottawa), Ontario, Canada.

The Butler House was built during the mid 1800s, so this survey marker likely was placed after the house was built I suspect.

Note the warning: "5 years imprisonment for removal"! Wow!

As per Michael Scott from Ottawa: "Those monuments were installed when the highway was rebuilt in 1935 from a dirt trail to a paved road, it was the main highway from Ottawa to Montreal at the time. The Canadian Northern Railway (CNoR) route from Ottawa to Hawkesbury, which ran more or less parallel to it, was abandoned in 1939."
