It is, then, not wonderful that ourDutch friends should desire to keep the Allied Army forthe defence of their own frontier, and should, therefore,throw all obstacles in the way of the great Dukes in-cessant determination to seek out the largest FrenchArmy he could find and beat it in the field. Over theseand over all other obstacles, down to the year 1710, thegenius of Corporal John/ as his adoring soldiers calledhim, invariably triumphed. Godolphin, nominally a Tory, was LordTreasurer and a warm friend of the Duke ; Harley andSt. John, who came in as Secretary of State and Secretary-at-War respectively, at first did what they were toldto do, and only began to intrigue about 1707 ; whenthey were dismissed in 1708, Walpole, an admirablefinancier, took St. Johns place ; and, though the ToryOpposition incessantly plied the cry of Church inDanger! and endeavoured to stimulate a Church fever/as an antitoxin to the war fever, the career of victoryproved until about 1709 irresistible to the Englishpeople.
