PALEOLITHIC ART 43 twelve miles from Krems, Szombathy discovered in 1908,deep down in the loess, a statuette of a woman sculpturedin limestond. The surrounding deposits point to its beingof Aurignacian age. It was probably originally coloured,for there are traces of red paint upon it. It represents awoman of massive proportions, completely nude, and withno ornaments save simple bracelets. All parts of the bodyare shown except the feet, but no facial features are dis-tinguishable.
