Text Appearing Before Image:
158. Bicester, Oxfordshire, c. 1420. In later examples we find ornament used to suchan excess as completely to overpower the features ofa building; no large space is left on which the eye canrest, but every portion is occupied with panelling orother ornament. An example of this may be seen inthe exterior of Henry the Sevenths Chapel, which hasmore the appearance of a piece of wood-carving than ofa building of stone; but in the interior of the samebuilding this very richness has a wonderfully fine efi^ect. The light and elegant style of vaulting known as fan-tracery (159), which is peculiar to this style, with its PERPENDICULAR MOULDINGS, 205 delicate pendants and lace-like ornaments, harmonizesfinely with the elaborate ornament of the tabernacle-work below.
Text Appearing After Image:
159. Cloisters, Gloucester Cathedral.Fan-tracery vault. The Mouldings of this style differ much from thepreceding ones. They are in general more shallow;that is, they have more breadth and less depth thanthe earlier ones. Those in most nse are a wide andshallow moulding, used in the jambs of windows anddoorways; a shallow ogee ; a round, or boutell; a fillet, 206 PERPENDICULAR MOULDINGS, a kind of hollow quarter-round, and a double ogee(160). The widemoulding of cornicesis filled up at inter-vals with large pa-terse, which replacethe four-l( avedflowerand the ball-flower ofthe Decorated style;or with heads, gro-tesque figures, or ani-TTials and foliage
