THE EARLY ENGLISH STYLE, III The north transept of York Minster (77) was built between1250 and 1260, byJohn the Eoman,treasurer of thechurch, or ratherprobably by thechapter of which hewas treasurer andpaymaster, and sohis name becameattached to it, moreespeci ally as heafterwards becameArchbishop of York.The records of thecathedral clearlyprove that it was theregular practice ofthe chapter to keepa gang of workmenin their pay as partof the establish-ment; the numbervaried from twentyto fifty, and thesame families wereusually continuedgeneration after ge-neration : to theircontinued labour, al-ways doing something every year, we are indebted for thewhole of that glorious fabric. John the Eoman, in 1247. It is an excellent example of a smallchurch of this style. The beautiful Lady-chapel of Wells Cathedral was com-menced by Bishop Bitton in 1248: he died in 1264, and wasburied in it. The style corresponds with that of the Angel-choir, at the east end of Lincoln, of the same period. The chapter-house at Salisbury is of nearly the same period,and very similar style. The chapter-house of York is of ratherlater style, and probably of the time of Edward I. The presbytery of Lincoln Cathedral was built between 1256and 1282, in which latter year the relics of St. Hugh we
