born in BreadStreet in the heart of London, December 9, 160S. His early years were passed in a sober and orderlyPuritan household among influences of refinement Boyhood at ^^^^^ ^^^f ^ ^^^ ^^ ^^^^London, 1608- ^vas a scrivener, an occupation somewhat 1624. corresponding to the modern convey- ancer, but he was also well known as a musical com-poser. The youuot-r Miltons faculty for music hadthus an opportunity for early development ; a fact ofespecial interest when we recall the distinctivelymusical character of his verse. Milton was early destined ^for the study ofhumane letters,^ and given every educational advan-tage. He ha-i private instruction, and about 1620was sent to the famous Grammar School of St. Paul.fHere, to use his own expression, he worked*^ witheagerness, laying the foundation of his future blind-ness by intense application. JOHN MILTON THE PUEITAN IN LITERATURE 175 In 1624 Milton entered Christs College, Cam-bridge, where he continued to work with the samesteady and regulated enthusiasm. Hisyouth was spotless and high-minded, 10^.16^*with perhaps a touch of that austeritywhich deepened as he grew older. His face had anexquisitely refined and thoughtful beauty ; his softlight brown hair fell to his shoulders after the cava-lier fashion ; his figure was well-knit but slender;his complexion, exceeding fair. From his some-what delicate beauty, and from his blameless life, hegained the college nickname of the Lady. Theyear after he entered college he wrote his firstoriginal poem, On the Death of a Fair InfantDying of a Cough, and to this period also belongthe resonant Hymn to the Nativity and other shortpieces. After leaving Cambridge Milton spent nearly sixyears at his fathers country house at Horton, a vil-lage near Windsor, and about seventeenmiles from London.
