ldiers at the Sepulchre, in Cut 55, (copiedat Plate 14), the latter cuts of the Speculum—those done by the artistlast employed—have no armed figures. Among the cuts, however,which, as has been said, were thrown aside by the original printer, andafterwards inserted by Veldener in one of his quarto editions, are twoother subjects with armed figures, namely, that representing theDeath of Absalom, and the last, entitled Ayoth Eglon regem per-foravit. They are slight, unfinished performances. For the moreperfect satisfaction of the reader, I have copied the armed figure inthe first subject, over the net of the fisherman above mentioned. Thearmour of Ayoth is the same ; both have the visor d salade, round attop, with the mentoniere. We have however seen, that this round-toppd visord salade, with mentoniere, occurs twice in the stories ofSanger and David; and that the same is of sufficiently frequent occur-rence in early illuminated manuscripts, is shewn in our Plates 27, 28,and 29.
