Title
An incomplete cast copper alloy shoe buckle, dating to the 17th/ early 18th century AD.
Description
English: An incomplete cast copper alloy (and possibly tinned) sub-rectangular shoe buckle with a drilled frame for a separate spindle, dating to the 17th/ early 18th century AD (length: 26.3mm; width: 24.9mm; thickness: 3.8mm; weight: 4.58g). Part of the outer frame is broken and incomplete as well as part of the pin missing. The copper alloy stud is also slightly broken. Overall, the buckle is in a worn and poor condition with a dark green patina. There are some small areas of bronze disease and the artefact appears to have been coated in a substance.

Similar examples are illustrated in Ross Whitehead’s ‘Buckles 1250-1800’, 1996, pages 102-3.
