Title
An incomplete Roman copper alloy trumpet headed brooch dating to the 2nd century AD.
Description
English: An incomplete Roman copper alloy trumpet headed brooch dating to the 2nd century AD. The brooch is formed of a spring hinge with part of the pin still remaining. The bow is flared at the hinge in typical trumpet style and has a semi-circular panel just beneath. The bow continues to taper down to a circular suspension loop at the foot which has been broken so that only part of it remains. A fragment of the catch plate is still visible but heavily worn. The semi-circular plate is voided and has three pellets running horizontally through the centre. It would have likely been filled with enamel. The brooch has been bent so that the foot end is raised.

Parallels can be found in Hattatt (2000, 329 nos. 972 and 458).

Dimensions: length: 29.51 mm; width: 13.68 mm; thickness: 8.03 mm; weight: 2.32g
