Title
An incomplete Roman cast copper alloy Colchester-derivative two-piece bow brooch (1st century AD).
Description
English: An incomplete Roman cast copper alloy Colchester-derivative two-piece bow brooch (1st century AD). The find consists of an almost complete Colchester-derivative brooch; only the tip of the pin, and the base of the foot and catchplate are missing. The brooch has a plate at the back of the head which is pierced twice; the axis bar for the spring passes through the lower hole and the external chord through the upper hole. A hemispherical recession runs along the reverse of the head and the pin bar fits inside this. The sprung pin has seven turns and has broken only at the outermost left point. At the shoulders of the brooch, the bow has a prominent raised central ridge and the bow radiates across the shoulders. The bow has a steep curve away from the head of the brooch and gradually narrows down the shaft. It has a D-shaped section with a flat back and a raised central ridge which is divided by a deep incision running along the central point at the front. The foot of the brooch has broken off, taking with it a considerable amount of the catchplate. What remains is a broken edge at the lowest point of the bow, and a small projection on the reverse that represents the upper edge of the catchplate. Approximately the lower 40% of the pin is also missing. Hattatt (2000) illustrates a similar brooch, fig. 156 ref. 1455, and assigns a 1st century AD date. This date range is supported by Bayley and Butcher (2004).

Dimensions: length: 35.56mm; width: 18.37mm; thickness: 2.46mm; weight: 5.28g.
