English: Lot Description
An illustration to the Razmnama India, sub-imperial Mughal, circa 1610 An intense battle scene with the army general Shalya in heavy gilt armor in the center, facing the pandavas at left wearing jeweled crowns and holding weapons, their gestures and expressions implying a significant halt mid-fight, the horse-drawn chariots with billowing flags in all four corners, with inscriptions on the top and bottom and stamps of the Royal House of Lucknow in the margins Opaque pigments and gold on wasli 8½ x 5¼ in. (21.6 x 13.3 cm.), painting 15¾ x 11 in. (40 x 28 cm.), folio Lot Notes This folio from the Razmnama illustrates a significant episode during the final battle of the Mahabharata. Shalya was the ruler of Madra, a formidable and invincible warrior, making him a desirable ally. On hearing of the impending battle between the Pandavas and the Kauravas, he intended to join his nephews the Pandavas, to fight for good. But Duryodhana, the leader of the evil Kauravas, pretended to be the Pandavas and tricked Shalya into joining their side. To mend his predicament, Shalya promised Yudhisthira to help the Pandava brothers by demoralizing the Kauravas during the battle. But eventually he was killed by a spear. This painting shows a warrior (at left) holding the spear, and is likely the moment before Shalya's death. |
