but not freely. Wild birds have several times beenobtained which appear to be hybrids between it and the FerruginousDuck ; and one of these is the so-called Pagets Pochard describedby Mr. W. R. Fisher (Zool. pp. 1137, 1778), shot on Rollesby Broad,Norfolk, and now in the possession of Mr. J. H. Gurney, who has asecond example, shot in the same county in February 1859. Thishybrid has been named F. hojneyeri and F. ferindides. The adult male has the head and neck chestnut-red; breast andupper back black; mantle finely freckled with black and white ;speculum inconspicuous and grey; under parts greyish-white; tail-coverts black ; bill black with a broad band of blue across themiddle; iris red; legs and toes bluish-grey. Length i95 ; wing825 in. The female has the head, neck and breast dull brown, andthe chin white ; the rest of the plumage being browner than in themale. The young at first resemble her, and the black breast is notassumed by the drake during his first year. 1 ANATID/K. 431

THE RED-CRESTED POCHARD. FuLiGULA RUFixA (Pallas). The Red-crested Pochard is a southern and eastern species whichwas first noticed as a wanderer to the British Islands by J- Hunt, whofigured a female killed in Norfolk in July 1818 ; and eight or nineexamples have since been obtained in that county, chiefly in winter.Others have been taken along the east coast, from a little south ofBerwick-on-Tweed to the mouth of the Thames ; Devon and Corn-wall have each contributed one ; and there is a specimen in theBritish Museum from Pembrokeshire. In Scotland one was shot mArgyllshire in January 1S62 ; and in Ireland one, in co. Kerry, onJanuary i8th 1881. This Pochard has only once occurred in Denmark, and seldomvisits the waters of Holland, Belgium, France or Switzerland; it iseven very local in the Spanish Peninsula, being almost confinedto the lakes on the east side and those in the Balearic Islands, mostof which are gradually being drained. In the southern half of Italyit is not uncommon,
