The settlement was denominated the Mas-sachusetts Bay Colony, and its niembers were greatly strengthenedin 1630, when the celebrated John Winthrop arrived with threehundred pious families. Winthrop was chosen governor of thewhole colony, and established his residence where Boston nowstands. Misfortunes, however, still thickened around them ; sick-ness and a severe cHmate made fearful inroads into their numbers,a;nd, before December, two hundred died. But the survivors werenot discouraged.
