?5^ etr^ zJ it NAPLES. t The line of railway that runs from Marseilles clings to the borders of theMediterranean, past Nice and its adjacent health resorts, past Genoa andits palaces, past Leghorn and its commercial life, past Civita Vecchia toRome. Here and there are breaks in this long line. At Genoa, for example, the branches shoot off for Milan and Turin, whilst at Leghorn they linktogether Pisa and Florence, Bologna and Venice; thus the whole of thegreat cities, memorable from their associations with the past, or temptingfrom their treasures of the present, are bound together by that iron road. From Rome the railway no longer skirts the coast, but branching inlandlinks Capua and Caserta with Naples. Of all the treasure-cities of which Italy can boast, there are few that canenter into competition with Naples. The site is one of surpassing loveli-ness, and associated with the life of the past. In its neighbourhood theold Greeks founded their colonies, and their conquerors the Romans
