f St. Mark. The birds are very tame; they are quite a feature of theplace, and are fed every day at two oclock. The church of St. Mark is built in the shape of a Greek cross and occu-pies all the eastern side of the Piazza. There are three doors of metal inlaidwith silver leading into the church, that on the right having been takenfrom the mosque of St. Sophia at Constantinople. The interior of thechurch is even more beautiful than the exterior, and is thus described byMr. Ruskin :— There opens before us a vast cave hewn out into the form ofa cross and divided into shadowy aisles by many pillars. Round the domesof its roof the light enters only through narrow apertures like stars • andhere and there a ray or two from some far away casement wanders into thedarkness and casts a narrow phosphoric stream upon the waves of marble i that heave and fall in a thousand colours upon the floor. This description fairly enough ushers in the general beauty .of the interior. To fill in the details would occupy more space than is atour command : suffice it to say, that the marbles with which it is enrichedhave been gathered from all nations, whilst the mosaics are the mostbrilliant in the world. St. Marks must be seen and studied to be appre-ciated to its full value. The church of Santa Maria della Salute is built on 1,200,000 piles, andcontains in the ante-room of the sacristy Titians celebrated painting of St.Mark and four Saints. In the sacristy is the Marriage at Cana, said tobe the masterpiece of Tintoretto, and one of the three pictures which hesigned, the other two are The Crucifixion and The Miracle of theSlave in the Church of St. Roch.
