We believe the samemight be said of each of the passes, so far as nobility and beauty are con-cerned. The masses of grouping may vary, but the general effects are thesame. We will take the route over the Simplon. The railway fromGeneva runs past Martigny to Sierre, where the diligences start for crossingthe pass, once every day. The scenery in the earlier part of the journey ismuch associated with ancient castles, which may be seen on almost everyhill top. As th ^ diligence proceeds further, it passes the villages of Leuk,Susten, Tourtemagne and Virge, until Brique is reached. From this pointthe ascent begins, and for the most part follows the road constructed byNapoleon after the battle of Marengo, until at length the splendid panoramaof the Alps is brought fairly into view. Those who are enthusiastic aboutAlpine scenery declare that this portion of the view is well worth the entire

From thence the descent is throughevery variety of scenery towards the softer climate of Italy. Now it is agorge of stupendous grandeur, like the Gorge of Gondo, now it is thewaters of the Frassinone which leap from crag to crag until they are lost inthe abyss below, and now it is a dark mass of rock which is lost in theclouds above. These alternate with patches of delicious verdure, vineyardsand olive groves, until Fariolo is reached, when Lake Maggiore bursts intoview with the Isola Madre in the distance. The diligence then proceedsrapidly to Arona. In the case of the St. Gothard Pass, the steam boatpasses from Lucerne to the other end of the lake, and at Fluelen thethe diligence is taken to cross the pass. In the summer season there aretwo services daily. The scenery is practically the same as that of theSimplon. The points of variation
