In October, 1678, the ship Shield from the port ofHull on Humber, Yorkshire, England, dropped anchorin the Delaware river before the present site of the cityof Burlington, New Jersey, the first trans-Atlantic shipto go so far up-stream. Smith, in his History of NewJersey, published in 1765, states that the vessel in tack-ing up the river before an adverse breeze, in turning onthe Pennsylvania side, became entangled in the over-hanging trees, at a point where the city of Philadelphiais located, and that some one on board made the propheticremark that the place would make a fine site for a city.Could they have foretold that the great Quaker Citywas to spring up at this spot, to become famous as thecradle of American Independence one hundred yearslater, they would undoubtedly have landed and estab-lished a settlement.
