Jean Berain (thefather) was born inParis about 1638. Hewas appointed by LouisXIV. designer to thechamber and cabinet ofthe King, in whichcapacity it was his dutyto design the sceneryand costumes for thecourt fetes and ballets.Other architects whoafterwards held thisposition had to do thelike. It will be re-membered that InigoJones, architect toJames I., designed thescenery for the courtfetes, while Ben Jonsonwrote the words. Beraindied in 1711. Jean Berain (theson) succeeded to hisfather as draughtsmanto the King. He etchedseveral plates from hisown designs of the or-naments of panels andsculpture which are inthe Gallery of Apollo inthe Louvre. Bouillecarried out some ofBerains designs in thepanels of his cabinets,etc. As Jean Berain wasone of the artists whodesigned for Boule, Ihave thought it best togive here a description (Continued on page 87.)
