The Empire style isfounded on the ancientRoman and Greek styles.After the Italian warsand the Egyptian expe-dition were over, theFrench seem to haveturned towards an as-sumption of classicalism—imitating the oldclassical ideals — andcarrying it so far as toimitate in the shape ofthe backs of theirchairs, etc., the Romanbas-reliefs and drawingson antique vases. Theoccasional introductionof the Sphinx, as in thearms of the chairs shownon these pages, wasmeant to remind peopleof the French expeditionto Egypt. Furniture wasmade in mahogany,rosewood, and ebony,with brass mounts, orthe carved ornamentswere gilt. Another modewas to inlay the woodwith metal and ivory.These methods of in-laying in metal on aground of ebony or dyedwood seem peculiarlyadapted to the nature ofthe mahogany furnitureso much in use at thattime, which they en-liven, without prevent-ing it by any raisedornament from beingkept free from dust anddirt.
