uence of this separationhalf the threads of the warpare brought in front, whilethe other half fall behind. To each thread of the leaf, at the height of the workmanshand, is attached a bit of fine cord in the shape of a ring, called acoat (see d, No. 2), and these coats are fastened to a strong pole,called the coat stave (see c, No. 2). It is by drawing these coatsforward that the workman, who is seated between the warp andthe picture which he is copying, can bring the back threadsforward, so as to enable him to cross the warp and the woof.The material for the woof is wound on a wooden shuttle,called a broach or flute (see /, No. 2). To form the web, theworkman takes a shuttle mounted with wool or silk, the endof which he fastens to the warp tc the left of the spare to becovered by the colour in his shuttle ; then passing his left handbetween the two leaves separated by the baton de croisure, hedraws towards him the threads which this shade is to cover.
