architect had reserved his more elaborateand minuter decorations for the interior of this structure, where they couldbe displayed with the happiest effect. The capitals of the shafts dividingthe niches are enriched with the utmost variety of foliage; the upper mould-ings of the canopies spring from heads, soine grotesque, and others indifferent costumes, each marked with a stro ig expression of character;the points of the rosettes in the windows exhibit similar decorations; andthe spandrils of the arches over the entrance are embellished with foliageand figures of lions, griffins, and dragons Even the base of the centrepillar is not without minute representation of different animals. A quatre-foil pannel above the entrance was onc< apparently filled with a crucifix,and in the intervals between the leaves 3 the emblems of the four Evan-gelists. Among these the groupes representing the History of Josephand his brethren, are no way inferior to the figures over the entrance. * In this building the Parliamentary Commissioners held their sittingsduring the great Rebellion; and on the mutilated walls we trace proofsof that antipathy to images which marked the reign of the puritans. Partof the sculptures on the left are almost entirely defaced; but towards theright the marks of devastation are less frequent, and a few groupes onthe opposite side are left uninjured. Much as this exquisite structure has suffered from the injuries of time,and the depredations of ignorant malice, enough yet remains to conveyan idea of its original beauty.
