ventured on so hazardous an undertaking. Howevergreat the beauties of those chapels, it was judged necessary to removethem; and the consent of those who were considered as representatives ofthe founders was obtained. To preserve the component parts they wereemployed in the alterations, and arranged with equal taste and effect;some forming the organ screen, some the present altar piece, and somedecorating the choir. The wooden screen raised in the time of bishopHume was taken down, * the Lady Chapel thrown open to serve as thechancel, and the communion table placed at its east end. The altar piece consists of five niches, of curious workmanship ; threeof which were the altar piece of the Beauchamp Chapel, and are im-mediately over the communion table; the niches on each side were theentrances to the Beauchamp and Hungerford Chapels. The communiontable is of stone, and composed of parts of an old altar piece, concealed by * A part of this screen now forms the Altar Piece of St. Martins.

Under the windows is a seriesof niches, the canopies of which are formed by a cornice of the Beau-champ Chapel, exhibiting foliage, and fan work tracery, rising from corbelheads. The organ screen, under which an arched entrance leads into thechoir, is composed of ornaments selected from the Beauchamp and Hun-gerford Chapels, and tastefully decorated with a rich cornice taken fromthat of Beauchamp* The walls and buttresses of the Lady Chapel wererestored, the windows brought to their proper level, the seats which dis-figured it removed, and the pavement was raised a few inches to give anascent from the choir. The principal window was adorned with a Paintingof the Resurrection, designed by Sir Joshua Reynolds, and executed by Mr.Eginton, -f of Birmingham.
