By the Fvedera, vol. xviii. p. 99., we find that there was issued to him, in conjunctionwith the Earl of Arundel and others, a coipmission to prevent the building on new found-ations within two miles of London and the palace of Westminster ; and in 1620 he was, ifpossible, more uselessly employed by James I. in guessing, for it was no more, who werethe builders of Stonehenge. For this last, the necessary preliminary information had noteven dawned, although Walpole, in his usual off-hand manner, loses not, in alluding to it, tlieojjportunity of displaying his own dreadful ignorance on the subject.
