in the upper end of the windpipe is situateda very important organ, the larynx. If we place ourfingers upon the outside of the throat just below thejaw, we can feel a hard bunch move up and down as weswallow. This bunch, sometimes called the Adamsapple, is the larynx. Figure 33 shows its location atthe beginning of the windpipe. Inside of the larynxare the so-called vocal cords, by means of which we areable to make sound when talking. Below the larynxthe windpipe passes. down through the neck in astraight line and enters the chest, where, as shown inFigure 33, it divides into two branches. The Lungs.—When the windpipe divides, one branchenters one of the lungs, and the other branch enters theother lung. The lungs look like two elastic bags, as RESPIRATION 107 indicated in Figure 33, and are capable of being dis-tended when air is drawn in, and of collapsing whenthe air is expelled.
