ginal cause of this loss ofsemen. Masturbation furnishes the principal contingent of these cases, closely followed in frequency by other sexual excesses and abuses. Even excessive natural coitus may lead to spermatorrhoea, thesexual powers varying greatly in the several individuals. A peril almost equal to that of masturbation is incurred by reserved coitus. I would be almost inchned to consider this fre-quent cause of spermatorrhoea as equal in its deleterious conse-quences to onanism; but its consequences are more apparent in ma-ture age, w^hile masturbation is a cause of spermatorrhoea in youth. Other causes, but less frequent, are a general debility of theblood and nervous system, the so-called neurasthenia, be it congeni-tal, inherited, or else acquired in consequence of severe exhaustingdiseases or excessive bodily or mental excitement or strain. The frequency of spermatorrhoea and its influence on the bodyhave been judged very diflerently. After the exaggerated descrip- PLATE 59

Spermatorrhoea.Last drop after urinating FeyTvs microscopy. EXAMINATION OF THE URINE. m tions of Lallemand had drawn the general attention for some timeto this chapter of pathology, a reaction took place, when this dis-ease almost passed into oblivion. Its existence was considered arare occurrence, and many authors and physicians of the presenttime still adhere to this view. My experience, gained by very numerous investigations of thissubject, leads me to the positive assertion that spermatorrhoea is notonly not rare, but a frequent disease. Still I agree with Zeissl when he says that gonorrhoeal sperma-torrhoea—i. e., that caused by gonorrhoea—rarely occurs. (SeeChronic Urethritis, Plate 53.) The main reason for the difference of opinion on this subjectseems to be the tedious examination necessary, and the difficulty ofalways obtaining the necessary samples of urme; for the micro-scopic examination of the urine must be made frequently, and hasto be extended at least over two week
