Text Appearing Before Image:
en had just arrived from the American Academy atRome, with the intention of seeing the August Palio, and of making some studies of Sienese architecture. I,who for so long had been the only man amongst somany ladies, was nowhere now. Fortunately I hadkept my room while I was away, or I might have beenstill more out of it; for I was told there was hardly abed disengaged in all Siena, the August Palio attractingmore strangers than that of July. The young men were nearly all architects, orstudents completing their studies in Rome. Theirenthusiasm was exhilarating ; from morn till night theywere filling their sketch-books, some going so far as tomeasure up several of the palaces. As these men arethe pick of the future builders of Americas streets andmonuments, it is curious to speculate in how far thestudy of Sienas mediaeval structures may show itsinfluence in the cities of the New World. Shortly after the Palio races one of these architects 256 THE PORCH OF THE PIEVE AT SAN QUIRICO DORCIA
Text Appearing After Image:
MONTEPULGIANO accompanied me to Montepulciano, he preferring tostudy the Renaissance in that town to the earlier build-ings of San Gimignano, which attracted some of hisfellow-students. John Addington Symonds description of this, thelordliest of Tuscan hill-towns; Mr. Maurice HewlettsMontepulciano, heaped in a pyramid, pearl-grey andred, the hill-town which makes a grander flight intothe clouds, and Mr. Pennellspoets vision of this rock-bound eyrie, which illustrates the last writers Road inTuscany, were more than enough to draw me thither.I was also influenced by the more prosaic account givenby Herr Baedeker: A picturesque town, surrounded bymediaeval walls, lies conspicuously on a mountain(2070 ft.). Both Siena and San Gimignano lie high, but not as high by some hundreds of feet as those whichare so modestly bracketed. It was a cool summer assummers go in Tuscany, but hot enough for a town, sowell ventilated, to be attractive. As far as Asciano our route is the same as toMonte Olive
