11 July 2009. Weeds, wildflowers, a dumped metal chair-leg, and someone's glasses hanging on the fence. This secluded, fenced area is what users of Marcus Garvey Library see from south-facing windows. In summer 2009 it looked very overgrown and uncared for. Google Earth's measuring tool suggests this plot is about 8 metres by 37 metres. Haringey councillors for the Bruce Grove, Tottenham Green and Tottenham Hale wards run a Saturday morning rota for residents to come and see us. For these 'advice surgeries', we sit in pairs, in the room at the far left of this photo. Cllr Bernice Vanier and I tried to imagine how this overgrown area would look if tidied up. Bernice had the great idea that it could become a garden/play/nature area for children. The Children's Library is through the blue window at the centre of the photo. Later I raised this with Diana Edmonds, until October 2011, Head of Haringey Libraries. Diana told me that library staff had a similar idea - to create an outside reading area for children. They had plans to clear the ground and were looking for additional funding.
