PINARA. 141 three immense stones. I measured one over the portal,which was fourteen feet in length : the buttresses of thesame walls were of regularly squared stones. These modes of building were both used in the sameworks, and certainly at the same time; the Cyclopean,which is generally supposed to be the older mode, Ihave often seen surmounting the regular Greek squaredstone walls. The whole city appears to be of onedate and people, and, from its innumerable tombs,must have existed for a long series of generations andfrom a very early period. The inscriptions are gene-rally in the Lycian character, but the Greek occurson the same tombs with the Lycian, which will pro-bably add to our knowledge of the latter; and theseagain may be explained by bas-reliefs, which are hereof exciting interest. I have endeavoured to explain, that in some of thetombs at Tlos occurs a portico, within which are pre-served highly interesting historical bas-reliefs. Onefine tomb before me, shown in the annex
