Description

This one surprised me entirely. I was shooting some Yellow Wattled Lapwings - some 25 of them were on the ground too close to a dirt road making me wonder why that is. I was focusing on the lapwings with the camera and there was a banyan tree in the background.

Suddenly this very large raptor flies out towards me from the banyan tree maybe at a distance of 25 feet. It flew over my vehicle, but I was able to grab a few shots from the passenger side window.

Oriental Honey Buzzard is large bird of prey that is resident to the country, but also migrates to Northern China during summers. The bird nests in the winter around few forests in the region, but the nest is hard to spot since it chooses thick trees. It feeds on small birds and reptiles maybe. I suspect that it was waiting to strike on the Juvenile Yellow Wattled lapwings when I stumbled onto them. If I had seen that, I would parked far away and watched the action.
