Title
An Incomplete Crotal Bell of Post-Medieval Date (AD1650-1850)
Description
English: An incomplete crotal bell of Post-Medieval date (AD1650-1850). Only approximately one quarter of the bell survives, consisting of one half of the lower hemisphere, part of the circumferential rib and a maximum fragment height of 6.5mm of the upper hemisphere.

The small amount of surviving upper hemisphere shows that the upper hemisphere was decorated with 'sunburst' design, the terminals of two being visible. The remains of an upper sound hole is also visible between the two 'sunburst' terminals. This sound hole has a diameter of 6.0mm. The area around the sound hole is defined by a plain border of 11.90mm diameter. The circumferential rib has a width of 3.7mm.

The surving half of the lower hemisphere shows half of two sound holes joined by one edge of the slit. These sound holes have a diameter of 6.5mm. These sound holes are also defined by a plain border that continues to form a border along the edge of the slit. The lower hemisphere is also decorated with 'sunburst' design, three rays of which are present. At the centre of the surviving lower hemisphere half, abutting the border of the slit, is a shield shape defined by a plain border 1.5mm wide. The shield has a height of 10.5mm and width of 9.2mm. Filling the centre of the shield is a hammer that resembles a capital 'T'.

This fragment weighs 12.72g, has a thickness at the slit of 2.4mm and 1.3mm at the upper hemisphere's break. The fragment has a height of 23.6mm and diameter of 30.2mm.

Contemporary illustrations often show bells worn as sets on the harnesses of larger animals such as oxon and donkeys.
