Description |
Friedrich Christian Accum or Frederick Accum (1769-1838) was a German chemist whose most important achievements included advances in the field of gas lighting, efforts to keep processed foods free from dangerous additives, and the promotion of interest in the science of chemistry to the general populace. His work, An Explanatory Dictionary of the Apparatus and Instruments, was intended to address areas he found to be lacking in the field of Chemistry, namely that apparatus referred to in texts of Chemistry were insufficiently described. From the preface: "The design of the present publication is to remedy these defects, by affording representations, accompanied by suitable description, of all the apparatus necessary for carrying on the multifarious operations of Philosophical Chemistry. The work includes seventeen quarto copperplate engravings, of which all are digitized here. |
