Title
An Early Medieval silver penny of Edward the Martyr (AD975-978).
Description
English: A modern copy of an Early Medieval silver halfpenny of Edward the Elder (899-924), based upon Norrth 660 (floral penny) albeit seemingly intended to be a halfpenny version, of which no real examples are known. The style and flan of the coin are not consistent with an early-medieval piece- the flan is too smooth and the design/inscription too well defined and crisp. It may be an 'Ashmore copy' who produced a very similar fake penny of this type (T. Abramson 'Anglo-Saxon counterfeits', p.152).

Obverse: Small cross pattee within a plain inner circle; inscription: EADVVEARD REX

Reverse: A line with two small leaves at the base and a small flower at the top; in centre, a large pellet from which spring two large curved lines containing the moneyer's name BUGA; inscription: BV/GA

Dimensions: diameter: 16.18mm; weight: 0.85g.
