Title
An Early Medieval cruciform-style brooch
Description
English: An incomplete copper alloy brooch of the cruciform type, dating to the Early Medieval period (c. AD 400 - 600). Only the foot and lower bow survive, the rest of the object having broken away in antiquity. The foot is in the shape of a beast's head with moulded, ridged eyebrows and prominent rounded eyes. The snout extends towards the terminal of the brooch with a prominent raised bridge of the nose and raised nostrils. The terminal is indicated by a double collar, the upper with vertical line decoration and the lower with horizontal line decoration. Just above the eyes of the animal is the remains of the bow, indicated by a narrow projection terminating in a worn break. The reverse of the brooch is flat where the eyes of the animal are and slightly voided where the snout of the animal is.
