Title

An Early Medieval buckle plate (Visigothic).

Description
English: An Early Medieval (Hispano-Visigothic) cast copper-alloy buckle plate dating AD 600-720, roughly rectangular but flaring out slightly to one rounded short side. There are four projecting flat knobs on each of the long sides. There may have been another knob on the rounded end but this is damaged. The straight short side has two vertically pierced lugs for attachment. On the reverse there are three protruding vertically pierced lugs, two near the attachment end and one near the rounded end. The outer surface has incise decoration within a border of rouletting. This is an apparently abstract design dividing the field into a triangular and a drop-shaped area within which are dot-and-circle motifs forming the centre of scrolling linear decoration. The wide end of the drop-shaped section contains a feather like motif but the surface has been damaged and it is hard to be certain of the design.
