Title
An Early Medieval (Frisian) silver sceat dating to AD695-740.
Description
English: An Early Medieval (Frisian) silver sceat dating to AD695-740. Series D type 2c. This coin is from the mint at Domburg in the Netherlands and is associated with the Frisian culture. The obverse depicts a crude bust facing right with a beaded crown, though this type would also have a triangular design above to imitate a radiate crown. There are the runic letters APA to the right of the bust with other lettering, possibly OV[---] to the left. The reverse depicts a cross pomee with pellets in each quarter. The inscription running round the edge of the coin is not very clear. There would have been a cross at the beginning of the legend and the letters [---]OHVV (or ONW) are visible.

It is believed that the name Apa may belong to a moneyer from the Domburg mint in the Netherlands.

A parallel can be found in North (1980, no. 163) and on the PAS database: PUBLIC-E088F1, GLO-C47306 and NARC-5DA8F4
