Portion of placenta (P) remaining in utero: death from sepsis five days after delivery in a typhoid con-dition. Colored girl, nineteen years old, syphilitic, with dead fetus at term (Army Medical Museum, Wash-ington, D. C, No. 77&i). PATHOLOGY OF THE PUERPERIUM. 687 is deposited in a fine branch of the pulmonary artery, forming an abscess,from which the microbes are carried to other parts of the body to form newfoci of suppuration. Most important of all seem to be the different degrees of virulence of themicrobes themselves. Virulence is a property of the protoplasm that showsitself in energetic proliferation and increased power of resisting the influenceof the cells in the organism invaded. This virulence is diminished byartificial culture, and is increased in the animal body, but in what way isunknown. The virulent streptococcus rapidly invades the tissues.
