Symptoms.—Psoriasis is essentially a disease of the skin, affecting noother organ of the body, and, as a rule, leaving the general health un-impaired. It has been called a disease of the healthy, but in reality,besides the strong and robust psoriatics, many weak, anemic, and poorlydeveloped ones will be found. Fever of a moderate degree occasionally accompanies more acute out-breaks. Itching is often present, but never with such intensity as in eczemaand similar skin-diseases. It is more prominent, either where the lesionsdevelop very rapidly and over a large area, or in chronic cases where clean-liness and hygienic measures are neglected ; in a considerable proportion it isentirely absent. Some authors insist on the frequent coincidence of psoriasiswith gouty and rheumatic joint-affections, and on the existence of some Plate 17.

The mucous membranes never participatein the psoriatic process; conditions of the mouth and tongue, described aspsoriasis buccalis or lingualis, have nothing in common with psoriasis of theskin, but rather depend upon other cutaneous or general diseases (syphilis,lichen planus), or appear independently (leukoplakia). The lesions of theskin themselves are of a more uniform and well-defined character than inmost other skin-diseases. Commonly, psoriasis appears in isolated patchesor islands of diseased skin surrounded, or where more numerous separated,by perfectly healthy portions of the skin. Sharp and often slightly raisedoutlines cause them to stand out quite conspicuously. The border of a patchis generally smooth or red, without a congested or inflammatory zone in the
