Trip to Canton. 141 windows of the pilot-house we looked outupon the yellow stream, the fresh green ofrice-fields along the banks, the darker, shiningfoliage of the trees, and a tall pagoda risingup here and there. We passed the village ofWhampoa, whose neighboring hills are coveredwith rows of Chinese tombs, and in the middleof the afternoon arrived at Canton, where we. saw the heathen world in full force on thelanding, and crowds of boats. Mr. Worthington met us, and took us ina sampan to his house, a dreary, blackish edificeon the edge of the canal. Passing througha ground-floor that was very cellar-like, weascended a flight of stairs into cheerful rooms,and there stood the missionary family withwarm greetings for the visitors from their ownfar-off land.
