Notes
English: In the folk law of many parts of the Sepik the bird is regarded as the ancestral spirit of the village, having given birth of the first humans. In figures such as the one seen here therefore, the head very often depicts that of a bird, with the skull elongated and adorned with tufts of hair, for this one it is just plain carving. Similarly the nose is extended to represent the beak. (Grace Vele)
(Grace Vele)
