Title
ampulla (reverse)
Description
English: Medieval incomplete lead ampulla, broken and flattened, upper part missing, elaborate crown above on one side on field of lozengiform cross-hatching, small plain cross on other side, 33 x (at least) 38mm. The crown is often found on ampullae in combination with a range of other motifs for Our Lady, Queen of Heaven. Shown on its own here it may represent the golden crown given by Henry III and worn by the statue of Our Lady at Walsingham (see note in Spencer 1980, 16-7, no.40).
