Title
Ampulla (fragment)
Description
English: A fragment of a lead ampulla, or holy water flask, of probable late 14th to early 16th century AD date (see B. Spencer; 1990; pp. 58).

The piece represents the bottom of what would orginally have been a flat-bottomed or bag-shaped ampulla. On one side are several cast ridges, which have been used to represent a scallop shell - the symbol of pilgrimage. The other side bears an indistinguishable design which includes three vertical ridges - possibly part of a cross - and, in the bottom right corner, a figure-of-eight scroll.

The piece is badly damaged and corroded. It measures 24.7mm high, 38.2mm wide and 14mm thick. The weight is 22.44g.
